Wineglass Marathon

My friend Kendra Stumpf and her husband, Robert, came out here to Corning to run in the Wineglass Marathon. Robert, ran the 12 mile as well. It was great to see a familiar face in our neck of woods. As a result of her finish, she now officially qualifies for the Boston Marathon coming in with a time of 3:44,25

congrats Kendra!!!! For yor Dad, always!

Phantom Softball is on its way...

After many glorious days of rain, the Phantom Fastpitch Softball season finally begins!!! {However, it did give me a little more time to get my ACE coaching certification to assist with our T-ball team} I've been wanting to sponsor a team for that last couple of years, and I guess this year the motivation was having my daughter, Maddie, start playing. Sports Style by Mommy & Me Photography is proudly sponsoring, the Butterflys. A group of giddy, ambitious, warm hearted girls who are all ready to play. Our first game was played with only having 2 or 3 previous practices.... Despite the fact that most of the girls carried their bat with them to first base, or they weren't sure where to throw the ball, the girls had FUN!!

Sometimes too much fun?????

WOW....my poor blog poorly neglected....{facebook has taken over, but that's no excuse!!}. Recently I went to go visit my son, Derrick Rovira, who plays defensive end {#36} for the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University..had my camera and took some pics hoping to catch some action.....but to his and my disheartment, he did not get to play one down. This was {and I am being disgruntled when saying this} the ONLY game since starting his college football career last year that HE DID NOT PLAY!!!! With that said, I still managed shots of his teammates, his roommate, his girlfriend, and him.

Derrick Rovira is returning as a Sophmore to the West Liberty Hilltoppers contending for a starting defensive position...the team is strong having a national ranking and first in their region.

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Coming off a Top 10 national ranking and a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs, West Liberty head football coach Roger Waialae likes what he’s seen from his veteran Hilltopper squad heading into the final week of preseason drills.

“We have 27 seniors back and that’s really enabled us to get a lot done,” Waialae said. “We’re to the point now where most of our players have been here for a while so we’re not starting from scratch. We’ve added a few tweaks to keep things fresh but our main goals were to fine tune what we think we do well and shore up the areas we needed to improve.”

West Liberty led the nation in scoring and total offense a year ago and has just about everybody back from the first offense in college football history to feature a 4,500-yard passer, a 1,500-yard rusher and three 1,000-yard receivers.

All-American junior quarterback Zach Amedro, runnerup for the Harlon Hill Award as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year after leading the nation with 49 TD passes and 4,945 passing yards, isn’t working out with the team. With only one semester of eligibility remaining, he’s sitting out the spring in order to use that last semester in the fall.

Waialae says Amedro’s absence may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

“I’ve probably only seen Zach two or three times this semester because he’s been staying away from the team,” Waialae said. “It hasn’t been easy.

“On the other hand, it’s opened up a lot more reps for our other quarterbacks and they’ve really stepped up. (Freshman) Tyler Tucci might be the most improved player on the team.”

The quarterbacks certainly don’t lack for quality targets.

Junior All-Region tailback Kevon Calhoun scored 26 TDs and rushed for 1,529 yards – both school records – last fall.

Junior TE Ryan Travis (104 catches, 1,250 yards, 14 TDs) was a consensus All-American while junior WR Kashif Walls (61 catches, 1,321 yards, 22 TDs) made several All-America teams. Fellow junior WR Willie Walker (51 catches, 809 yards, 8 TDs) combined devastating blocking skills with game-breaking downfield speed.

One of the most talented receiving corps in the nation is being put to good use building strength on the other side of the ball this spring, especially in a secondary which was susceptible to the big play a year ago.

“The defensive backfield was a focus in recruiting and it has been a focus in the spring,” Waialae said. “From what I’ve seen so far, our defense is catching up to our offense in terms of quality depth.

“We have six or seven kids at the corners with six or seven more at the safeties and they can all play. Two of the transfers – Dashon Fooks and Alec Wood – have stood out but we have 10-12 kids for the five secondary spots. Competing against our receivers every day has really accelerated their development. I’m confident we’ll be much improved in the back.”

The 2009 Hilltoppers set the bar extremely high, rolling to an outright WVIAC championship, winning a school-record 11 games and finishing the year ranked No. 9 in the nation.

Waialae – the reigning WVIAC Coach of the Year – says his 2010 edition won’t back down from the challenge.

“We probably had the best offseason in terms of conditioning since I’ve been here,” Waialae said. “We had a taste of success last year and it just made us hungry for more.”

West Liberty will close out its spring football drills this week with the annual Black and Gold intersquad game on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon at Russek Field.

West Liberty Picked to Contend for WVIAC Grid Crown

Hilltoppers among six teams receiving first-place votes in coaches’ poll

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Coach Roger Waialae’s West Liberty squad was one of six football teams to receive at least one first-place vote here Saturday afternoon when the results of the West Virginia Conference’s annual preseason coaches’ poll were announced.

The only WVIAC team with winning records in each of the past four seasons, the Hilltoppers were ranked fourth in one of the most tightly-packed preseason polls in years.

Defending champion Glenville State was the No. 1 pick of the nine coaches with four first-place votes. The next five teams – Charleston, Seton Hill, West Liberty, Shepherd and Fairmont State – all received one first-place vote to form a virtual logjam just behind the Pioneers. West Virginia State, Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan rounded out the poll.

West Liberty must replace All-Region running back Branden Ore, All-American cornerback Darren Banks and record-setting placekicker Billy Hager but Waialae believes his Hilltoppers will be able to show the league coaches that they’re better strategists than prognosticators.

“We did lose three of our top players,” Waialae said, “but this is probably the best team I’ve had coming back since I came here. For the first time, we won’t have to play a lot of freshmen and sophomores. We’re going to be a junior- and senior-laden team and I’m excited about that.

“We have Zach Amedro coming back healthy for his junior season at quarterback. Zach played hurt most of last year but he’s still thrown for more yards in his first two seasons than anyone in the history of our league. Eddie Hills is back. He led the conference in receiving last year as a wide receiver after putting up back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his first two years.

“We have eight starters coming back on defense, which is tremendously important in this league. Our inside linebackers – Nick Harding and Clay Beeler – were the top tacklers in the WVIAC last season. We have just about everybody back except Darren in the secondary and I think we’re going to be better up front.”

Waialae said a strong recruiting class with a good mix of collegiate transfers and high-profile freshmen could be the key to taking West Liberty from second place – its home for the past three seasons – to first.

“We needed to do a better job of protecting our quarterback and pressuring the other team’s quarterback,” Waialae said, “so we made a big push to recruit offensive and defensive linemen and I think it paid off.

“The most improved area of our football team is our offensive line. Guys who started every game for us a year ago will be fighting to keep those jobs this month. We’re deeper and faster on the defensive line, as well. We could rotate as many as 12 defensive linemen every game. We’ve done a lot of good things at West Liberty over the past four seasons. Now it’s time to take that next step.”

Derrick Rovira signs Letter of Intent with West Liberty State College

Derrick Rovira of Weir High School, Weirton, WV signed his letter of intent with West Liberty State College of West Virginia. He recorded in his senior year with the Red Riders, 124 tackles {individual leader on team), 12 QB Sacks, 24 Stops for Loss, 6 forced fumbles, 1 safety on defense; and with 801 yards rushing (second lead on the team) with 11 TD's. He received West Virginia AA First Team for Defense, a Big 22 candidancy, and the Dapper Dan Athletic Achievement award. In speaking with West Liberty's head coach Roger Waialae today, he said that he is very excited to have Derrick on board with the HillToppers. As well, you can't imagine how all of us are feeling right now. We are all very proud of Derrick's accomplishments and absolutely cannot wait for the football season to start again!!! And you know what the best part of all this is, their colors are black and gold!!!! Whoa hoooooo!!!

Derrick Rovira Again.....one of the 13 honorees to receive the Dapper Dan Special Achievement award on February 14th.

The Weir Red Rider defensive lineman earned his second W. Va. Class AA all-state honor this season. The three-year starter has led the team in tackles every year and also played fullback and tight end on offense.

My son, Derrick Rovira, never seizes to impress me. It does break my heart that I'm not able to attend every football game or every wrestling match, and even see who he takes to the high school dances. But he knows I'm always cheering for him, even if it is all the way out here in California. But last weekend, my boy finally made the headlines...despite the fact that he only took 3rd at his latest wrestling tournament, he did have the opportunity to wrestle the best in the Ohio Valley.

WHEELING — Weir High’s Derrick Rovira is the No. 1 seeded wrestler in the state of West Virginia at 215 pounds. But, in last weekend’s Ron Mauck Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship, Rovira was the No. 5 seed in the same weight class. “I was actually kind of happy,” Rovira said of his OVAC seeding. “Coach (Ray Pernell) put me in a good spot.” Rovira ripped through his first three opponents, pinning Cambridge’s Keith Doty in 21 seconds, Edison’s Brandon Bradley in 1:17 and earning a 11-6 decision over John Marshall’s Sam Gilmore, the No. 4 seed. He then had to take on No. 1 seed and friend Branko Busick in the semifinals. “It didn’t really matter to me when I wrestled Branko,” said Rovira. “I might as well wrestle the best early. It wasn’t tough wrestling Branko. I just kind of forgot we were friends. “This is really good competition to get ready for regionals and states.” Busick won, 16-5, and then beat St. Clairsville’s Levi Holcomb for the title. Rovira moved onto the third place match against Monroe Central’s Schuyler Bondy, the No. 2 seed. He pinned Bondy in 4:21. “I thought we were in pretty good position as the fifth seed,” Pernell said. “I knew if we did well we would face Branko in the semifinals. But, you can only get better when you wrestle the best. “Branko is one of the top wrestlers. “It paid off because Derrick came back through the losers bracket and finished third.” Rovira pinned No. 8 seeded Dave Vaughn of Shadyside in the consolation semifinals in 2:59. He finished 4-1 in the tournament with three victories by fall. That’s pretty impressive stuff for a guy who has been wrestling at the high school level for the last two years. Rovira finished third a year ago at the state tournament. He dropped a 5-4 decision to Point Pleasant’s Casey Hogg in the quarterfinals and fought his way back to beat St. Marys’ C.D. Cox 11-8 for third place. Currently, Hogg is ranked No. 3 at 285 and Cox No. 4 at 189. The Red Riders senior is 25-2 four weeks before the regional tournament Feb. 20-21 at Tyler Consolidated High School. “Derrick’s confidence should be up there, but we have to forget about this next week and get back to work,” said Pernell. “Last year at this time is when he started to improve. “Hopefully we can keep it going. “As long as my assistant (son Justin Pernell) keeps pounding on him, keeps working him, making him run and working hard, he’ll improve. And, he’ll do that. “I feel this is the tournament for kids to see how they are doing. If you place here, you are doing well. For him being two years in and to finish third is great (Rovira went 2-2 at the 2008 OVAC and did not place). “He works hard. “If we continue to work hard, trying to improve each day we’ll be OK. It's Wrestling Season!!!!

After finishing their last game again James Monroe, Derrick immediately took the mat to begin his winter season in wrestling. Taking third in the state last spring at 215lbs, he is starting off his season ranked first in the state!!! In his first tournament in Morristown this past Saturday, Weir High senior Derrick Rovira won the 215-pound weight class at the Doan Ford Invitational by defeating Shadyside’s Brian Kahl. You are off to good start....proud of you!!!

Yes, I'm back posting...behind as usual, but just wanted to say congratulations to the Concord High Minutemen football team for a season well deserved. You guys worked hard and wish you all the best!! The team ended their season on November 14th with a win against Mt. Diablo 26-20. I had the honor to meet up with a fellow football mom and inspiring photographer, Nancy Porfirio, to give her a few pointers on camera settings, using Lightroom and Photoshop...it was great fun shooting a mid November football game in warm weather....this win gave the Minutemen a playoff birth. They played Friday, November 21st, 7:00PM: 1st Round NCS Game v. Casa Grande @ Casa Grande...and lost:(

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Well today, my husband and I thought it would be a good idea to explain the Thanksgiving holiday to our 3 year old daughter. As I started talking about Plymouth Rock, the pilgrims and such, my husband blurts out..."maddie, its about eating and watching football all day!!". Augh....better luck next year in telling the story. So enjoy the day all you sports fans. I'm going to plunge into a bowl of french onion dip and chips along with a cold one and watch the games while the kids nap!!! ENJOY!!!!

Weir vs James Monroe TODAY at 1:30...

Ok, I'm sitting here on the edge of my seat listening to the game on WEIR1430.com. Derrick is having an AWESOME game!! The game started off with a James Monroe 85 yard kick off return touch down....Bryant Davidison running up the gutt and Derrick Rovira running the outside dragging defenders with him - he is not going down...the field is muddy, its cold (20C). The Mavericks are holding off the Weirs passing game.....Cody and Brendan are trying to get the passes, but Bubbs is just having a heck of a time getting grip on the ball. Mud is everywhere!!! Mike Salko is hitting hard, Nick Robinson is fired up and holding the offense....Artie Chappel is putting pressure on the offense and Mike Rascci forcing punt returns, Billy is protecting our running backs, and big Vance is not letting anyone pass him by. Its a good GAME!!!

At the half, Derrick Rovira has 7 carries for 22 yards, 2 sacks and ton of tackles!!!! Weir is behind 14-0..

it is all about field position....parts of the field are just a mud bath and cause of turnovers....getting past these areas are key and getting optimum field position to run the ball and score...Geez when Derrick plunges with the ball, he is laying 3 yards....what a big guy!!!!

oh, no....Bryant is sacked for a 11 yard loss.....8 minutes to go and it is 14-7 with John Monroe's advantage....now the ball is picked....@#%$#%

ball is picked again!!!!....lost our first down opportunity...we just burned through our 3rd time out. The clock is ticking and we lost possession of the ball. GIVE the Ball to D!!!! 40 secs left.....another time out is taken now with 24 secs left for the Red Riders to score...... :(

JM has possesion...takes the knee.....we lose 7-14.....

Derrick finishes the game with 13 carries for 50 yards...JM held back Weir's running game...overall, well done. Now we can turn off the lights........

Remembering Bob Jeter...

Weir High gridiron legend dies in his home in Chicago on Thursday. Bob Jeter was an all-stater with Weir High from both sides of the ball when he played football during the 1950s. He later starred as a running back in college at the University of Iowa and then as a cornerback with the Green Bay Packers, playing in the first two Super Bowls. He played for the Packers from 1963-70 and was with the Chicago Bears from 1971-73. He was inducted in 1985 into the Packers Hall of Fame as well as the Daper Dan Hall of Fame.

Embarrassed to say that our dear Weir High got totally tramped by Magnolia during season play 31-0....what happened guys!!!!! Out of your systems now......it is now GridIron Supremacy, the road to the Island....it is now or never!!! Take it.....take it, TAKE IT!!!!!!!

Derrick Rovira and the rest of the Weir High Red Riders has just had the most awesome season ever!!!! They finish the season 8-2, solidifying a 4th place ranking in the State (West Virginia). Last week, they ventured into their first playoff game against Independence (13th) and won 24 - 13!!! Derrick Rovira rushed 200 yards, and ran a stunning 57 yards for a touchdown!!!! The big guy does it again!!!! This Saturday they face John Monroe (12) at 1:30....if they win, they will either play Magnolia or Keyser.

And to top all honors off, Derrick has been nominated for three categories in the Ohio Valley!! Go D!!! Follow the link below and VOTE for him!!!

Weir High's season ended with a 8-2 record...defying all predictions from the season previews. These guys found their talents. The coaches utilized these talents to orchestrate some of the best ball that these boys ever played. They played with determination, strength and heart molding into a single playing unit of a team geared toward another State Championship birth. Playoffs are here....it is now or never....

GridIron Supremacy...documenting the history

Well, although nothing free to give today....kind of in a creative crunch right now, I was moved by getting some of my son's football career documented for his GridIron Supremacy album. Long before this little guy could even throw a football, he was on the field. While at Bethany College, his dad played nose guard and I was the athletic trainer (but when it got cold, I was up in the press box documenting the game's play by play). As part of Derrick's album, I'm documenting a few "snip its" of his documentation while playing for the Bethany Bison football team. Ironically, and we all saw this coming, Derrick has expressed a great interest to return to Bethany College as a freshman next fall. (gosh, and it seems like only yesterday I just left there....as a matter of fact, I'm reminded every month still as I'm paying off my student loans!!!) He said he was highly impressed with the freshman dorms stating that they have dorms specifically for the football players. Man, has things changed!!! I've gotta see this. But the college has undergone drastic renovations and it does look fabulous. However, the town of Bethany still has no gas station....just a little grocery store, post office, fire station and the great ol' Bison Inn.

So what I did was cut out this newspaper article, scanned it, and saved it as a jpeg (300 dpi should be sufficient for the news article). The photos were scanned at 1200 dpi. Made the layout, and overlayed the news article to cover the entire page spread. I then choose the "multiply" blend mode to make the article similuate a transparancy. Placed my photos (which were scanned, and edited using Boutwells' Old Skool action)...and there you go....cute huh? Yea, Derrick was a very a cute baby...boy do I miss his little hands and feet.

Weir Red Riders get Shut Out by Magnolia

I hate documenting loses, which is why it has taken me a week to post this shut out. The Weir High Red Riders lost 31-0 to Magnolia. Magnolia was overdue for some action on the account of their last two previous loses; they utilized the game play well to their advantage. I believe that Weir just did not expect such a blow coming from a 4-3 team. So out of your system now boys, huge challenges are awaiting with Claymont next week and cross town rival, Brook the following.

Out of the Tunnel {GridIron Supremacy Freebies 1}

Hi all, for you football moms, here you go. I was first inspired by watching ESPN while running on the treadmill at the gym, "Out of the Tunnel" feature that they usually have during college football previews. Then, when I was in Minnesota visiting my family, a thunderstorm was approaching while we were outside enjoying cold drinks on a hot hot terribly humid day and the clouds were turbulent and full of fire. I made a png file from the photos of the clouds. The coloring was added by using my texture created by my wonderful Pampered chef stoneware cookie sheet. Well used and full of various ambers, reds, golds, yellows and blacks (from burning some of my baked goods :) Pieced everything together using lots of blending modes, layers and etc. to create one of my first pages for my GridIron Supremacy Album (coming towards the end of the season!!).

Weir High Shuts out John Marshall....

It was Weir's first win over John Marshall since 2004. The Weir High Red Riders picked up their fifth win of the season defeating the Monarchs 40-0. Quarterback Bryant Davidson (Weir #25) scored 4 touchdowns and racked up 189 yards on the ground while fellow senior Derrick Rovira (Weir #11) picked up a rushing touchdown in the second quarter. Weir is now 5-1 and faces Magnolia this coming Friday. Good luck gentlemen!!

Kudos to my former Softball Coach

While attending Bethany College years ago, I had the opportunity to play softball for a season. With coaches, Jan Foresty and Peggy Fillinger as my guides for not only the wealth of the game, but for having my back on life's challenging events. Thank you ladies for a wonderful and fun time!!

And this weekend, my former softball coach, Peggy Fillinger, is being inducted into the Bethany College athletic department's Hall of Fame....
courtesy of the Wheeling Intelligencer: "Peggy Fillinger played two years for the Bison softball team. She earned team MVP accolades in 1984 and then received Pennwood West Conference Honors in 1984 and 1985. Fillinger set a school mark for most putouts and helped Bethany set a record for victories in 1985.

Off the diamond, Fillinger was a member of the Phi Delta Psi Physical Education Honor Society.

After graduating from Bethany in 1986 with a degree in physical education, Fillinger became an athletic trainer and returned to her alma mater. She was the athletic trainer for Bethany's 1994 men's soccer national championship team and the 2002 softball team which reached the NCAA Division III World Series. She also earned the West Virginia Hero Award from the West Virginia Legislation after she saved the life of a Bethany College student. Currently, she works for Excela Health Orthopedics in the Greensburg/Latrobe area east of Pittsburgh.

Fillinger, who graduated from Notre Dame High School in Batavia, N.Y., resides in Jeannette, Pa., with her husband Gary Gallagher and they have three children: Scott Gallagher (22), Kady Fillinger (19) and Shane Gallagher (16).

Congrats, Coach Fillinger!! Well deserved!!!

Weir Wins Homecoming Game

4 and 1 now with win over DC's McKinley Tech, 56-19. Straight out of Charleston, the Weir High Red Riders went into the game tied for a 10th place in the West Virginia AA HS Football Rankings:

Weir's First Loss of the Season.....

Well, behind on posting, but who wants to post a loss, right? My trip to the 'burgh went well. Had the opportunity to chat with friends, eat my favorites, and spend time with my baby boy (well, not so little at 6'0" and 240lbs). Surprised him at the pre-game meal, then attended his game vs the St. Clairsville Red Devils. Derrick (Rovira #11) managed to rush the ball 10 times for 59 yards, had 12 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks (sharing with Artie Chappell, #60). They lost 35-17.
But here are some of my game day photos. Enjoy!!

...and notice the camera man getting clocked. ouch!!! He took a hard hit, but no one was injured. :)

Weir high triumphs again against cross town rivals, Oak Glen in a 13-12 win in overtime.

Tied 6-6 at the buzzer, the game goes into overtime. Oak Glen scores the first touchdown and goes for 2, only to be tackled on the edge of the zone. B. Davidson (Weir - #25) goes into quarterback position and gets pushed in for a touchdown!! They kick for the extra point and it is GOOD!!!! Derrick Rovira (Weir - #11) did quite well rushing for 166 yards and doing a 60-yard run. A few sacks and lots of tackles!! (pictures to come soon!! - courtesy of Newbrough Photo).

Weir faces Ohio powerhouse, St. Clairsville, this Friday. A dual of the undefeated!!! See you all there with camera in hand!!!!

Weir High: 2 - 0.....another BIG win!!!!

Another big win for Weir High football, conquering over Edison 23 - 6 last night. Derrick, noted as the "BIG Guy" by the news crew at WTOV9 demolished the Edison line like a brick house. He managed 5 carries for 35 yards, "lots of tackles" - quoted by Derrick, and a quarterback sack resulting in a fumble recovery by Weir for a touchdown!!!! Go D!!! Weir High vs Petersburg: 47 - 6

Well, despite the fact that these boys had to travel in a bus for over 4 hours prior to gametime, they totally released all energies to overcome the Petersburg team in a 47 - 6 win!! I talked to Derrick on the way down, and all he could say was, "mom, this bus ride is looooooong." And that got me worried, not only for him but for the team. I remember playing volleyball for the University of Dubuque and we had to drive all the way across the state for 4 hours to Buena Vista College for our match which only lasted a whole hour because we got shut out....fast... But the powers to be were on their side!!! Derrick did a great job at running back, providing lots of yards in the run plays[numbers to be provided later:)] and scoring a touch down!! Wish I was there to see that one (did anyone get a picture??). He also played linebacker holding the line on defense and managing a few tackles. Good job, guys!! and good luck vs Edison next week.

The Weir High Red Riders will be attending their first of the season on Saturday, August 30 in Petersburg, WV. High anticipation is in store for the players and for Derrick who is a huge prospect for college ball. Good luck Derrick and to the rest of the team. I will be there in heart. Just a sampling of Derrick's Senior's photos (many more coming soon!!). The team had their first scrimmage on Saturday vs Linsly at Wheeling Island. Derrick felt good after the scrimmage. The defense held Lindsay during the entire first half of the scrimmage. Although no official score was kept, Derrick did say that each team did get a touchdown. Overall, he felt good and is ready for some football..........

BIG 22 Pre-Season Football 2008.....

Can you just feel it in the air? In another week or two, I'll be able to go outside and smell "Football". Can't describe it really....a mix of hot late summer with fall, the buzzing of the bees on the clover in the grass, the whistles, the grunting, the contact. There is just something about the air in football that just pumps me up. I'll be traveling back east starting this weekend and that's when I can start smelling it in the air. And I was even more pumped to find out that some of my football photos are being considered for publication in the Ohio Valley Edition of Big Season Sports magazine. Whoo hooo!!! (Thanks, Brad!!) And, and a BIG AND, my son, Derrick is a BIG 22 candidate. For those that follow OHIO and WEST VIRGINIA high school football, this honor is HUGE. It is like the pro bowl of the NFL. I'm pumped and I'm proud. Go Big D!!!!

How to shoot night football.....

Shooting night football games is a challenge, let alone doing sports photography is a challenge all together, then you add the lighting variables. Yikes!!! But it is fun and when you can get good shots, you win!! I've been asked, "So, how do you shoot night football."

Yes, I do use the BIG white L lens...currently just the 70-200mm IS f/2.8 and planning on getting the 300 IS f/2.8 when profits flow. My camera is a 40D and I'm loving it next to the Mark DIII that I can't have right now. However, if you do not have the right lens, you can rent them.....I use Borrowlenses.com....ask for Max. He's great!!

During the football game, from the start to the finish, I'm constantly changing my settings...of course, as the game progresses it gets darker...

At the start of the game, I use Shutter Priority, usually an iso of 400-800, shutter speed of 1/500 or lower[for the games in August/September, I go faster like 1/5000 why not, its bright enough].... f/4.0 - f/2.8. I do not use an extender for night games due to loss of the aperature...f/2.8 is needed hands down. Continuous shooting, AI Servo, center focus point....as the night progresses, I begin cranking up the iso [usually by halftime I'm at iso 3200], and start locking the aperature at f/2.8...so by then I typically switch between Aperature Priority or Program Auto Exposure. I have yet to attempt manual mode :)

And you are right, I do not use flash....I only have my built in or my 580EX and personally flash makes the photo look too fake IMO. I have seen nice ways of using external flashes, but right now, I don't want to add that to my bag. Instead, I move around the field [I'm on the sidelines right next to the coaches and players] and try to get the stadium light behind me, and I play around with my exposure compensation [ currently at 1/3 increments, but still playing around with what increments will work best] by increasing it...on my camera this little trick will not work in Manual Mode.

My lens has image stabilization....I do not use a monopod....too restrictive to get the cool shots and lessens my mobility. I will only use the monopod when its cold like in the teens and snowing because then my whole body is shaking and with that much shaking going on, the IS can't handle it. My coldest game was 10C and snow in West Virginia, proud to say however, that I was last photographer standing on the sidelines....

Also all my photos are taken in JPEG...I know shoot me now...I use RAW for my portraits, but with sports, I need speed and RAW just slows up the process. Plus, I typically take 1500+ photos per game. my 40D captures at 6.5 frames per sec and I need that. Also, I use a card with a write speed of 300x...this helps too. 133X will work as well,,,,don't use a an 80X just too slow for continuous shooting.

I use auto white balance, but making adjustments using White Balance shifting focusing on the visiting team's usually white jerseys....again very subtle shifting and sometimes not at all.

My post processing involves a batch processing through Noiseware, very subtle to minimize the high iso noise [the 40D does have built in noise reduction for high iso, which does great when your exposure is just right].....fix the levels, curves, color as needed, crop, then subtle unsharp masking (if needed). If the face is too dark and that is the emphasis, I paint light on their face - just a little trick that I like to use. And once in a while, I'll do my photoshop magic taking the image out of the ordinary :)

So in a nutshell, get a zoom lens of at least 200mm, 300mm is better, 400mm is great, 500-600mm is best, an aperature of f/2.8 or less, fast shutter speed until it gets dark, crank up the iso, continuous shooting centered focus.

Heres a preview of some of the other games that I've captured over the last couple of weekends.

On April 12th, the Lady Firecrackers played against team Dynamite. How appropriate, because the weather that day was blistering HOT... a mere 90+ degrees!!! But it was agony of defeat for the girls, losing 8-2. Kudos to their pitching staff who threw heat......

On April 19th, although ending in defeat by a mere 6-7, their last inning was played with lots of heart and spunk. Balls were getting caught in the outfield, sliding in the dirt, and lots of stick hitting. And lets not forget, lots of cheer to Kelley, who had left the game in the first inning due to injury. Get better soon!!! We need you!!! Love the socks, Tink!!!

Last weekend, the Lady Firecrackers were head to head with the ladies from West Masonry being defeated by 1 run in the final innings. The final score was 6-7. Congrats to the ladies in "Pink" and go get 'em today, Lady Firecrackers!!!

2008 CYSA State Cup

On the weekend of March 29th, I had the opportunity to photogragh the Nor Cal U14 Boys Soccer team, Pleasanton Ballistic United, during their first round of the 2008 CYSA State Cup playoffs. On the 29th, the team's first game was against the higher ranked Foothill MVLA. They triumphed with a 3-1 victory.

The following day, Pleasanton Ballistic United faced Lamorinda and finished with a 1-1 tie. Based on points, team Pleasanton advances to the "Sweet 16" to face Santa Clara Sporting in Morgan Hill. Good luck guys!!

Go Lady "FireCrackers" !!!

When my "mommy's helper", Angelica, informed me that she was going to play softball, I was ecstatic (maybe even more so than her Giants' fan Dad)!!! Bringing back memories of being a pitcher for most of my life (then the adventures of motherhood prevailed), and the potential to become involved in the excitement of the game. I asked Angelica if I could get her game schedule and informed her that I would try to photograph as many games as I could. So on March 29th, I showed up to one of her pre-season games. Wearing red, white, and blue, I could tell that the Lady Firecrackers were going to be a giddy group of gals; yet, ladies as they are off the field (Moms, Dads, is this true??), they displayed the desire to play hard on the field. The preseason game provided the girls with the opportunity to try different positions; what they liked, didn't like. And to "taste the dirt". Oh yeah, these girls did not mind getting dirty. Enjoy the first gallery of the season of these fine ladies in play.... more to come during the season!!!

I love sports. I love watching sports. I love participating in sports. Best of all, I love photographing sports. Unlike taking the shot and posting it, I take the time to create a work of art. Using various blending methods and digital image enhancements features, action comes alive in an artistic kind of way.
